BGREEN Program

power plant update

Visitors to Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) these days will notice a change as they approach the Potter Road facility—a hard-to-miss photovoltaic array of 40 Suntech solar panels, each rated at 270 watts (W), on the roof of BELD’s Operations garage.

The 10.79 kilowatt (KW) solar array is one of the initiatives supported by BELD’s new BGREEN program, a voluntary renewable energy program through which BELD customers can purchase green energy units. For as little as $2 a month, BELD customers can voluntarily contribute to future installations of solar panels. For every $10,000 collected through the BGREEN option on your electric bill, BELD has committed to installing four more solar panels.

“Braintree Electric Light Department is committed to the installation of renewable green energy generation,” said BELD General Manager Bill Bottiggi. “This is the first renewable energy project to be solely owned and operated by BELD, but we expect it to be the first of many.”
